Jaanu” is a compelling piece of literature that explores the intricate challenges of mental illness and maintaining a hybrid identity in the Western world. Its purpose is to reveal the heartbreak and sorrow behind one of the largest man-made epidemics in the United States— gun violence—while also raising awareness about racism.

The story follows a high school student from an Indian household as he navigates the college application process. Despite his tumultuous family life, he eventually overcomes these barriers. However, he fails to check on his best friend, who has been absent from school, leading to a series of devastating consequences that leave a mother heartbroken by the story’s end.

Hello!

I am Yash Param, the author of “Jaanu.” My journey as a secondgeneration Indian-American has profoundly inspired me to share this story. Growing up in modern-day America has afforded me many privileges, but it has also exposed me to some of humanity’s darkest facets. I have faced racial discrimination and lived with the fear of attending school due to the threat of mass shootings—realities that only a few truly understand.

These experiences led me to question the humanity behind policymaking, to raise awareness about mental illness, and to advocate for equal justice for all. As the author of “Jaanu”, I invite you to reflect on these critical issues. Change begins when we broaden our perspectives and challenge our thinking. Ignoring these problems means we will never overcome them. I wrote this story to deepen my understanding of the world around me and to inspire others to do the same.

Thank you!
